MOTU Audio & MIDI Drivers for Windows
Thank you for choosing a MOTU audio or MIDI interface. This document contains additional information to supplement the printed User Guide that was included with the interface.
Compatibility
MOTU FireWire and USB audio interfaces, PCI-424 audio systems, and USB MIDI interfaces are compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7, Vista, and XP. The FireWire and USB audio interface driver installer program and USB MIDI interface driver installer program will detect whether you are using a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of Windows and install the appropriate software. To install the PCI-424 card drivers, choose the 32-bit or 64-bit installer program according to the operating system version you are using.
The drivers included in this installer package feature WaveRT support, legacy Wave audio support for older programs, and ASIO 2.0 support. (The MicroBook driver features Wave and ASIO support only.)
FireWire and USB Audio Interface Installation
It is recommended that you disconnect the audio interface from the computer before installing the drivers.
Here is an overview of the driver installation process:
- Turn on the computer, and log in to Windows. Double-click the SetupAudio program to start the installer.
- Click the Next button to continue through the prompts. You must agree to the license agreement to continue. Then click the Install button to begin the installation.
- If you are using Windows XP, a warning message about Windows Logo Testing will appear for each of the drivers that is being installed. Click the Continue Anyway button each time to proceed with the installation.
- When then installer has finished, a message will be displayed to inform you that the software has been successfully installed. Click the Finish button to close the installer program.
- Restart the computer, and log in to Windows. Connect the audio interface to the computer, and then turn on the interface.
Be aware of the orientation of the FireWire or USB plug when connecting it to the interface. Make sure that the curved part of the plug is aligned with the curved part of the port. Forcing the plug into the port the wrong way can permanently damage the interface.
- Continue to the following section according to the Windows version you're using.
- If you are using Windows XP, the Windows Found New Hardware Wizard will open and prompt you to connect to Windows Update to search for driver software. Choose "No, not this time," and then click the Next button. When prompted to choose whether to install drivers automatically or choose them from a list, choose "Install automatically," and then click the Next button. If a warning message about Windows Logo testing appears, click Continue Anyway. When the Found New Hardware Wizard has completed, click the Finish button to close it. You will need to complete this process for each of the different driver types (Wave, MIDI, etc.). Afterwards, a notification message will appear that states that the new hardware is ready to use.
- If you are using Windows 7 or Windows Vista, a notification message will appear that says, "Installing device driver software." Windows will automatically associate the audio interface with the appropriate drivers. When it is finished, the notification message will say, "Your devices are ready to use."
- Open the MOTU Audio Console program or CueMix FX program to confirm that the interface is working properly.
PCI-424 Card Installation
It is recommended that you remove the PCI-424 card from the computer before installing the drivers. Instructions for installing and removing the card can be found in the PCI-424 System Manual.
Here is an overview of the driver installation process:
- Turn on the computer, and log in to Windows. Double-click the SetupPCIAudio program to start the installer.
- Shut down the computer and install the PCI-424 card in an available PCI expansion slot.
Make sure that the PCI-424 card is seated properly in the slot. Most computer enclosures have a small screw or a latch that secures an expansion card to the chassis. We recommend securing the screw or latch so that the PCI-424 card does not move when connecting or disconnecting interfaces.
Be aware of the orientation of the AudioWire plug when connecting it to the interface or the PCI-424 card. Make sure that the curved part of the plug is aligned with the curved part of the port. Forcing the plug into the port the wrong way can permanently damage the interface or the PCI-424 card.
- Turn on the computer, log in to Windows, and then continue to the following section according to the Windows version you're using.
- If you are using Windows 7 or Windows Vista, a notification message will appear that says, "Installing device driver software." Windows will automatically associate the PCI-424 card with the appropriate drivers. When it is finished, the notification message will say, "Your devices are ready to use."
- Connect your PCI-424 system interfaces to the PCI-424 card using the supplied AudioWire cables, and then turn on the interfaces. For longer cable runs between the PCI-424 card and the interfaces, you can use standard six-pin FireWire cables up to sixty feet long. The first interface should be connected to the AudioWire port closest to the nine-pin ADAT sync port. Each additional interface should be connected to the next adjacent AudioWire port on the PCI-424 card.
- Open the MOTU PCI Audio Console program to confirm that the PCI-424 card is working properly.

- If you're using a MIDI Timepiece AV, MIDI Express XT, or Micro Express, open the ClockWorks program to confirm that the interface is working properly. If you're using a MIDI Express 128, Micro Lite, or FastLane, check the MIDI configuration options in a MIDI sequencer program.
