Working with Files over Bluetooth

With Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software, you can share local folders on your computer with other Bluetooth devices, transfer any type of files between computers and Bluetooth devices, create or delete files and folders on a Bluetooth device, use the Send-To Wizard from the Microsoft Office menu to send files to Bluetooth device.

Supported file transfer profiles include the following:

If a remote Bluetooth device supports Bluetooth High Speed capabilities, most file transfer operations are performed automatically in High Speed mode using the Wi-Fi radio.

Transferring and Managing Files over a Bluetooth Link

To access files and folders on a Bluetooth device, Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software provides a Windows Explorer integrated view of the Bluetooth device file system. This is the most powerful way of exchanging files with remote Bluetooth devices. Using it, you can:

All these operations can be done within a standard Explorer-like interface.

Remote shared files and folders can be accessed in two ways:

  1. Click Browse Remote folder in the Files Exchange group of the Bluetooth Device Operations and Settings window.
  2. Click on the virtual folder with the Bluetooth device name in Windows Explorer (Computer, group Other). This virtual folder is automatically created for every added Bluetooth device that has Bluetooth FTP server capability.

In both cases, the file structure of this Bluetooth device appears in the regular Windows Explorer view. Within this window you can conduct all normal file operations the same way as they would be done with local files on your computer.

Note: During an OBEX data exchange, it is possible for the remote device to request a password. The password may request text information to be entered and displayed to the user. This password is simply used and valid just for the immediate OBEX connection between the two devices communicating with each other over Bluetooth. If such a password request is made by the remote device, a dialog box will appear to the user where the password can be entered. Both devices must enter the same password to validate the OBEX connection and make it functional. If the passwords do not match, the connection will be terminated.

Sharing Local Folder for Other Bluetooth Devices

Using Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software, you can share folders on your computer with other Bluetooth devices. This can be done by using the Bluetooth Settings window. Refer for future details to the Shared folder configuration section.

Sending Files from Microsoft Office to Bluetooth Device

Using Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software, you can transfer Microsoft Office program files to other Bluetooth devices. This can be done for Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Power Point in the following versions:

To send an open Microsoft Office document to a remote Bluetooth device:

  1. Depending on the version of Microsoft Office you use, select Send to Bluetooth action in the menu or toolbar. Please consult Microsoft Office Help for explanation how to do this.
The Bluetooth File Transfer window appears.
  2. After Bluetooth File Transfer window opens, select a destination Bluetooth device and click Next button.
  3. The file transfer progress window appears and the current open document is sent to the selected Bluetooth device. You are notified on completion of this operation.

Receiving Files from Bluetooth Device to Computer

When another Bluetooth device initiates a file transfer to your computer (for example, using the Send via Bluetooth command), the message window Receiving Files appears providing a default destination path for incoming files.

Note: This window appears automatically only if the Bluetooth device uses a BIP profile for file transfer. Typically, this profile is used for sending pictures from a mobile device to a computer. To receive all other kinds of files sent using other profiles (for example, OPP), initiate the Receive a File operation from the Bluetooth tray menu.

Within the Receiving Files window you can change the default destination folder where incoming files/pictures are saved. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Browse and select a folder.
  2. After a path is selected, click Accept to start the file transfer.
  3. If you are receiving a number of files, you can click the Accept All button to confirm all file transfers at once.

To reject a single incoming file, click Reject, to reject all incoming files, click Reject All.
